LAKEWOOD, N.J. —Brett Newsome and Cole Leonida each went 3-for-5 and Justin Miller extended his hitting streak to nine games as the Hagerstown Suns held off a late rally to beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 11-9 on Sunday afternoon.
Hagerstown (8-3, 49-31) took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Steven Souza and a Lakewood error.
After the BlueClaws got one back in the bottom of the first, the Suns made it 5-1 in the third. Consecutive one-out singles by Cutter Dykstra and Caleb Ramsey set the table for Miller, who blasted a two-out homer to left — his sixth of the season.
The Suns added four more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double from Newsome and a two-run double by Leonida.
Lakewood answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Suns got those two right back in the sixth on Newsome’s two-run single. It was Newsome’s second straight game with three RBIs.
The BlueClaws (6-5, 32-48) closed the gap to 11-6 when Chris Duffy hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Lakewood made it 11-9 in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate in Tim Carver, but Aaron Barrett closed the door and picked up his 12th save by striking out Carver to end the game.
