HAGERSTOWN —The Hagerstown Suns celebrated the fourth of July by scoring two runs in the eighth inning to claim a 3-2 victory over the Lexington Legends in the first game of a five-game South Atlantic League series at Municipal Stadium.
The Suns (50-33 overall, 8-6 second half) trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, but Matthew Skole tied it with a leadoff home run to center off Legends reliever Evan Grills.
Lexington (43-40, 4-10) went to Murilo Gouvea (2-5) and it didn’t pay off. Steven Souza Jr. doubled, went to third on Caleb Ramsey’s flyout to right and scored the winning run on Sam Palace’s fielder’s choice groundout to short.
Richie Mirowski (1-0) pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Suns and got the win despite allowing both of the Legends’ runs. He struck out four. Aaron Barrett worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save.
Brandon Meredith’s solo home run in the top of the seventh broke a scoreless tie and put Lexington ahead 1-0.
Hagerstown tied it in the bottom half when Justin Miller doubled and came around on singles by Palace and Bryce Ortega.
The Legends took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth. Justin Gominsky and Ruben Sosa led off with singles, and with two outs, Mirowski walked both Matt Duffy and Mike Kvasnicka to force in the run.
