HAGERSTOWN —The North Hagerstown volleyball team began its Maryland Class 3A state title defense with a convincing 25-9, 25-8, 25-11 sweep of visiting Urbana in the West region quarterfinals Monday evening.
“We talked to the girls about not just going through the motions, but to be prepared,” North coach Megan Crawford said. “Everybody needs to do their job.”
Peyton Wallech had 19 kills and nine blocks for the Hubs, who improved to 14-1 with their 14th straight victory. Zoe Schreiber had 10 kills for North, while Christine Randall had nine kills and Sarah Bentley had 41 assists.
“We spread the offense pretty well tonight,” said Crawford, who seemed most impressed with Wallech’s nine blocks.
“That’s pretty incredible for three sets,” she said.
The second-seeded Hubs will host either No. 3 Damascus or No. 6 Rockville in the semifinals Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
“Hopefully this is going to give us some confidence for Wednesday,” Crawford said. “We don’t know who we’re going to play yet, but we hope to build from tonight.”
While the Hubs are defending state champs, they still have much to prove this year.
“It’s a totally different team. We haven’t talked about last year,” Crawford said. “The girls want to get back to states, but we never look back. We just have to take it one game at a time.”
