The Williamsport wrestling team opened its season Thursday night in commanding fashion as it overwhelmed Brunswick on the way to a 59-18 victory.

Eleven total bouts were contested with the Wildcats (1-0) claiming seven of them, including six by pin. Williamsport was victorious in the first five matchups of night — albeit, three were by forfeit — and cruised out to a 30-0 lead.

Josh Beckley (106) and Nick Miller (113) won the first two contests for Williamsport by forfeit, before Tanner Canfield pinned Kyree Wade-Joppy in the 120-pound class at the 5-minute mark.

After Barry Loeser scored a pin at 126 against Harold Shipe, Brunswick was again forced to forfeit, giving Williamsport’s Bryan Davis a win at 132 for the 30-0 advantage.

“It was definitely a good start to the season, but we still have a long way to go,” Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic said.

Brunswick eventually cracked the scoreboard when Jensen Foster defeated Sinjin Shoop with a 12-4 major decision at 138, but the Railroaders still trailed 30-4.

“Williamsport is one of the best teams in Washington County, so I expected a challenge tonight,” Brunswick coach Scott Tilles said. “We’re not where we need to be conditioning-wise, but the guys I expected to do good did.”

Back-to-back pins by Williamsport’s Effie Loeser (145) and Kobe Baker (152) gave the Wildcats a 42-4 advantage.

The Railroaders recorded their first pin at 160 as Todd Cockerham scored the fall over Justin Beckley in 3:25.

Williamsport and Brunswick would go on to split the final four bouts, which included a technical fall by the Wildcats’ Austin Golden at 182.

“We still have a long way to go as a team with our technique and conditioning,” Rechtorovic said. “But we have Boonsboro and South on Saturday, so we’ll need to be ready to go.”
