The Orioles and their three remaining arbitration-eligible players have officially filed salary numbers for 2013.
Closer Jim Johnson, who led the majors in saves with 51, asked for $7.1 million while the Orioles countered with $5.7 million. He is in his third year of arbitration and made $2.625 million last year.
Starter Jason Hammel, who was 8-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 20 starts for the Orioles last year, asked for $8.25 million and the Orioles countered with $5.7 million. He is in his fourth year of arbitration and made $4.75 million last year.
Reliever Darren O’Day, who was 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 69 games for the Orioles, asked for $3.2 million and the Orioles countered with $1.8 million. He is in his third year of arbitration and made $1.35 million last year.
If the sides cannot reach settlements, there will be hearings held in February. A panel of three arbiters will choose one number or the other in each case.
The Orioles rarely go to arbitration hearings. They broke a streak of five years without one when they beat reliever Brad Bergesen last year.
With attorney Peter Angelos running the Orioles, the club is 9-1 in arbitration hearings. Current club general counsel H. Russell Smouse is 7-0 since taking over the as the team’s lead in the hearings.
