MACKINAW CITY — The Boyne Falls High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams made it a clean sweep Wednesday.
The Loggers won both sides of a Northern Lakes Conference jamboree meet behind individual race winners Marcus Matelski and Erica Westbrook, who won in 18 minutes, 51 seconds and 21:04, respectively.
The Logger boys finished first with 26 points, followed by Alba, 48; Mackinaw City, 82; and Wolverine, 116. On the girls side, Boyne Falls finished with 41 points, followed by Ellsworth, 60; Alba, 74; Mackinaw City and Wolverine.
Boyne Falls Kory Skop was runner-up in the boys race in 19:12; while Wolverine’s Courtney Whittaker was second in the girls race, 21:57.
Also for the Boyne Falls boys, Hunter Williams was sixth, 19:36; while Brendon Matelski was eighth, 20:01; and Truman Crego, ninth, 20:16. Other Logger boys runners included Max Reed, 11th; Andrew Stevens, 13th; Kevin Lange, 17th; Josh Lange, 18th; Kyle Byrne, 22nd; William Miller, 23rd; Crosby Boettger, 33rd; Jordan Berreth, 37th.
For the Logger girls, Natalie Aikens finished sixth, 24:20; while Kaylee Wilson was ninth, 25:22. Other Logger girls runners were Megan Byrne, 12th; Kurstin Wilson, 13th; Madison Skop, 14th; Kaylee Herman, 17th; Katelynn Wilson, 18th; Emily Benedetti, 20th; Kelsi Churchill, 24th.
The Ellsworth girls were paced by Larissa Fisher who placed a team-best third in 23:38, while Taryn Rozema was fourth, 23:51. Other Lancer girl runners were Carrisa Karavas, 11th; Katelyn Sowers, 19th; Lexi Lambert, 23rd.
For the Ellsworth boys, Troy Vandenberg was 21st, followed by Zach Wynkoop, 26th; and Nate Veldboom, 27th.
Noah Morse led the Mackinaw City boys as he was third overall in 19:12. Other Comet boys runners included Carson Hartman, 16th; Jake Bell, 19th; Matt Rivera, 20th; Zach Smith, 24th.
For the Comet girls, Brianna Becker was seventh, 24:27; while Katrina Kendall-Thompson was eighth, 24:34. Katherine Watchorn placed 15th.
The Wolverine boys were led by Robbie Reese who was fifth in 19:27. Other Wolverine boys runners were Wayne Goddard, 14th; Tommy Moore, 25th; Brandon McCauley, 34th; Eddie Florenski, 38th.
BOYNE FALLS — The Harbor Springs boys’ tennis team placed second Wednesday in a Lake Michigan Conference quad tournament at Boyne Mountain.
Traverse City St. Francis won the tournament with 23 points, while Harbor Springs finished second, 17; followed by Charlevoix, six; and Boyne City, two points.
“It was very encouraging and a great way to get us ready for regionals,” Harbor Springs coach Brad Reed said. “Especially for our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams, they were right in those matches against St. Francis and they took a lot away knowing where they stand and what they are capable of.”
