Former UVA linebacker and Northside Viking Jon Copper is back in his hometown, running a weight loss contest for the Roanoke area.
Copper is heading up Biggest Loser Roanoke, with hundreds of dollars in prize money up for grabs.
The wellness coach and nutrition specialist ran a similar program in Charlottesville two years ago, and is using local gyms around the area to spread the word.
It's not associated with the TV show, but instead hopes to guide participants to a healthier lifestyle this summer, with money going to charity as well.
"It's all optional, but this is what we're offering. Every Saturday you'll have a workout. Pretty much daily you'll get diet, lifestyle and nutrition information through email," Copper said. "Once a week we'll have a conference call you can plug into. That again will be diet, lifestyle change information. If you miss that you can download it on our member-only site the day after, catch up on that. And then weekly we'll have some accountability groups around town. You can plug in and kind of do a check-in weigh-in, unofficially, chat with folks. About two-thirds of people in the Roanoke area are overweight or obese so we're going to do what we can to tackle that issue."
Enrollment opened in April and the contest begins May 19th.
