South Dakota youngsters interested in being nominated to one of the four U.S. service academies for the class of 2017 need to apply by the end of October.
State residents between 17 and 23 may apply for the service academies if they meet eligibility requirements in leadership, physical aptitude, scholarship and character. The academies are the Military Academy in New York, the Naval Academy in Maryland, the Air Force Academy in Colorado and the Merchant Marine Academy in New York.
U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, D; U.S. Sen. John Thune, R, and U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, R, will complete separate lists and make nominations of the most qualified candidates by Jan. 31, 2013. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications to all three members of the delegation in order to improve their chances of being nominated. The academies make final decisions on acceptance and announce appointments each spring.
Interested applicants should contact Johnson's office at 605-332-8896, Thune's office at 605-334-9596 or Noem's office at 605-275-2868.
