PERRYVILLE — Arthur Samuel Johnson, 75, of Perryville died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, in Danville. He was the husband of Mattie Warner Johnson.
Born April 7, 1936, in Boyle County, he was a son of the late William C. and Annie Mae Mundy Johnson.
Sammy was a mason, having worked with Bradley and Gibson Masonry. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was a trustee and also sang with the brotherhood. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he loved working in his garden.
Sammy was known as a great storyteller. He made daily trips to Whitehouse Auto Parts in Perryville and to Tony Webb’s auto repair in Washington County to share his stories. The guys at both places looked forward to Sammy coming daily as much as Sammy looked forward to being there. They will truly miss him.
In addition to his wife Mattie of 45 years, Sammy also leaves behind eight children; Anna Mundy of Nashville, Margaret Edelen and Alice Ann Johnson, both of Springfield, Sandra Carter of Harrodsburg, Charles Burton of Lancaster, Samuel C. Johnson of Perryville, Keith D. Johnson of Lexington and William Cecil Johnson of Stanford; a sister, Carolyn Coleman of Springfield and a brother, Charlie Johnson of Louisville and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving is a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by a sister, Christine Osbourn and a brother, Henry “Chuck” Johnson.
Services for Sammy will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Perryville, by Rev. Gerry Hearn with burial in the Springhill Cemetery, Perryville.
Visiting hours will be Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, 5-8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Perryville.
Active pallbearers will be DeAndre and Joshua Mundy, Tiras and Ivan Meaux, Forrest Lewis, Kevin and Dyron Johnson and Ryan Keene.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Whitehouse, Cline Lanham, Tony Webb, Norman Turner, Billy Webb, Henry Baker, William Graves, Oatho “Partner” Tate, Harry, Richard and Charles Young and Chris Gilpin.
