1. Near Newtown, U.S. gun ethos on display at museum

Connecticut's familiarity with weapons manufactured for personal use long predates the horrifying recent mass killing in Newtown, one of the worst outbursts of gun violence in American history. About 50 miles northeast of the village, Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art records the historical culture of guns in several acute and significant ways.

  11. Bated Breath Theatre Company Performs at the Wadsworth in Hartford

Visual art and theater are cultural chocolate and peanut butter. We've all stared at wall-sized paintings and imagined characters moving, interacting, playing out in three dimensions what visual artists convey in 2-D. For two nights, Bated Breath Theatre Company (pictured), a scrappy, local upstart troupe fresh off a residency at Hartford's Real Art Ways, takes to the Wadsworth's marble stairways and halls (how dare they?) to interpret the museum's Medieval to Monet: French Paintings in the Wadsworth Atheneum exhibit, focusing specifically on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's (1864-1901) Jane Avril Leaving the Moulin Rouge. If ever there was an artist ripe for theatrical interpretation, it's Toulouse-Lautrec, who himself was way into the Parisian theater scene in those heady, post-impressionist days.

  21. The Wadsworth in Hartford Featuring the Works of Artist Ahmed Alsoudani

Take a close look at Untitled (pictured) by Ahmed Alsoudani, a celebrated artist whose recent work was featured prominently in Venice, Italy, and ask yourself: what does this have to do with being an Iraqi-born American? Well, everything. Alsoudani was still in Iraq for the Iran-Iraq War of the '80s and the U.S.-Iraq Gulf War in the early '90s. He split in 1999 to study art in Portland, Maine, only to experience ramped up xenophobia in the wake of 9/11. His most recent works, which will hang in the Wadsworth until Jan. 6, allow glimpses into Alsoudani's jumbled-up memories and psychological baggage.

  23. World Premiere of 'The Last Intervention' at the Wadsworth in Hartford

Local filmmakers often get overlooked. They don't always get as much attention as local bands, artists or politicians. And that's a shame. But here's a chance to remedy that: head to the premiere of "The Last Intervention," a Hartford-based story of Melky (played by Alyssa Abreu), a "misunderstood, 18-year-old chica trying to find her place in the world," who's faced with an "intervention" staged by her divorced Dominican parents. Her dad, Cheche (played by Hemky Madera, pictured), swears he's not going to lose her to "drugs or to booze or to boys that do not know how to wear pants." Guests at the premiere will get to talk shop with director/producer Giovanny Blanco, writer/producer Sarah Thorp, producer Rafael Blanco and directory of photography Daniel Salazar III, and will likely get a chance to hobnob with a number of the actors.
