1. Nutcracker and Ugly Sweater Party This Weekend at the Wadsworth in Hartford

The holidays are hectic enough between parties you want to attend, parties you don’t want to attend, parties you don’t want to attend - but there’s an open bar so attendance is mandatory - shopping, relatives... the list goes on and on. Do yourself a favor this season and cover two classic holiday traditions – the ugly sweater party and the Nutcracker – in the same fabulous afternoon. CONNetic Dance’s edgy rendition of the Nutcracker will fill you with cheer without activating your cheesy alarm. In addition to the classical ballet moves and Tchaikovsky score, the audience will be treated to jazz, a sexy hip hop Sugar Rum and the dance troupe’s signature Florette – a high kicking waltz that is reminiscent of the Rockettes.

  3. CONNetic Dance's Nutcracker Suite and Spicy at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford

CONNetic Dance's Nutcracker Suite and Spicy takes the audience away from Candy Land and Tchaikovsky's classic score by leading them through an ugly sweater party, a Snow Ball and dancing Florettes, all to the music of jazz, hip-hop and tap. It's the third go-round for NS and S, and it happens at the Wadsworth Atheneum's Aetna Theater starting on Dec. 14.

  5. Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit Perform at Hartford's Arch Street Tavern on Dec. 8

Hartford must have done something karmically right to land two Jason Isbell visits in a single calendar year. Isbell, a former Drive-By Trucker who grew up in the Muscle Shoals, Ala. area, played solo at the Wadsworth Atheneum last time around. He's returning with his band, the 400 Unit, on the heels of Live From Alabama, a 13-track set released last month and the follow-up to their excellent 2011 studio album, Here We Rest. The wrong thing to assume here is that Isbell and Co. will return soon, so don't miss this one.

  15. Bated Breath Theatre Company Performs at the Wadsworth in Hartford

Visual art and theater are cultural chocolate and peanut butter. We've all stared at wall-sized paintings and imagined characters moving, interacting, playing out in three dimensions what visual artists convey in 2-D. For two nights, Bated Breath Theatre Company (pictured), a scrappy, local upstart troupe fresh off a residency at Hartford's Real Art Ways, takes to the Wadsworth's marble stairways and halls (how dare they?) to interpret the museum's Medieval to Monet: French Paintings in the Wadsworth Atheneum exhibit, focusing specifically on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's (1864-1901) Jane Avril Leaving the Moulin Rouge. If ever there was an artist ripe for theatrical interpretation, it's Toulouse-Lautrec, who himself was way into the Parisian theater scene in those heady, post-impressionist days.
