3. James Nares' new film looks at everyday moments

Set to an original score by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, artist James Nares' unscripted, hour-long high def video is a meditation on people-watching, shot over one week in September 2011 on the streets of New York City, from Battery Park to the end of Upper Broadway. Nares wanted his film to be about the everyday, magical moments we all experience but often overlook. It'll run at the Wadsworth until the end of October.

  13. 'Collective Memories' exhibition at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford

The first of two new exhibitions presented by the Amistad Center at the Wadsworth, Collective Memories explores societal concepts of race and culture — how they are created, distributed, and maintained historically — to help folks understand what it means to be African American. Organized thematically around three topics, people, places and things, the exhibit draws from the Amistad Center's permanent collection of art (including Ellis Walter Ruley's "Grapefruit Picking Time," c. 1930s, pictured), artifacts, manuscripts, documents, and other items from the 17th to the early 20th centuries.

Check in for a lecture by Hartford-native James Welling, who'll discuss Wyeth's influence on his own artistic development, on March 25.
