11. Forgeries party at Hartford's Charter Oak Cultural Center on Feb. 11

The Charter Oak Cultural Center knows how to throw a party. Head to this year's edition of Forgeries for re-creations of famous works by local artists — take a look at George Herrick's Mona Lisa (pictured) from last year's event and you'll get the idea — that will be auctioned off before the night's end. There's also food by Ann Howard, cocktails by David Brogan, live music by String Theorie and a dance party with WRCH's Joan Dylan. (Fake ID's, however, will not be accepted.)

  17. Covers and Originals

Alan Bisbort, whose name will be familiar to most of our readers (he's a regular contributor to the Advocates), has been cutting and pasting together collages for more than 30 years, mostly, he says, "to amuse friends and frighten neighbors." Bisbort's shown them a few times over the years (some have appeared alongside his Advocate columns). The month-long show at Charter Oak, his first solo show, features half a year's worth of Time covers (January to the end of June 2011) along with other "recovered" magazines, including Martha Stewart Living, Art in America, Art Digest and Juxtapoz. Thought-provoking, analytical, visceral: pure Bisbort.
