1. Native plants: White and blue vervain grow in many areas of Virginia

Blue Vervain, Verbena hastata, occurs broadly in piedmont and mountain areas of Virginia and in a few counties in the coastal plain. Growing 2-6 feet tall, clusters of many pencil-like spikes of small 5-petaled flowers grow at the ends of the branches. The flowers bloom a few at a time, advancing toward the pointed tip. The stem is grooved and 4-sided. This species can be found in moist thickets, meadows and roadsides, growing best in well-drained soil. The Narrow-leaved Vervain, Verbena simplex, is not as showy as Blue Vervain because it grows only about half as tall and its spikes of flowers occur singly (or in 3s) at the tip of the stem or branches. As its name implies, this species also has narrower leaves. It occurs more commonly in the coastal plain than does the Blue Vervain.

3. The Return of Cotton Mather's Kontiki

Cotton Mather, Kon Tiki (Star Apple Kingdom label)
Cotton Mather, Kon Tiki (Star Apple Kingdom label) Gosh, was I amazed to read that Cotton Mather had amassed enough cash (through online donations) to reissue its 1997 album Kontiki. This is one of those CDs that I cherished because I thought if I lost...

5. Peter J. Gomes dies at 68; Harvard's longtime spiritual leader

In a sermon some years ago, the Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Harvard University's longtime spiritual leader, offered a precise, if unconventional, definition of hell. He said hell is "being defined by your circumstances, and believing that definition."

7. Apocalypse, not now

Editor's note: My last blog post cited one reason -- guarding a brand -- that many Christians have objected to Harold Camping's prediction that the world will end on May 21. Jerry Newcombe offers several others in this essay. Newcombe is the host and senior producer of "The Coral Ridge Hour," based in Fort Lauderdale. -- Jim Davis

9. America's hometowns, found in New England

It's autumn in New England
Special to the Los Angeles Times
It's autumn in New England The days are getting shorter. Wood piles are stacked high. Geese are flying south, and Indian corn is hanging from the door. People in new L.L. Bean flannels stop their cars in the middle of the road snapping pictures or...

11. Puritans Viewed Christmas As Corrupt Religious Ritual

The Hartford Courant
The Grinch would have come up empty- handed in Colonial Connecticut. There would have been no presents under the tree, let alone a tree to steal. Christmas was viewed by the Puritans of New England as a corrupt religious, if not a pagan, ritual and was...
