  1. A political marriage

"The personal is political" slogan emerged from the consciousness-raising of early feminist groups, and it informs William Chafe's new book, "Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal." This isn't to say that historian Chafe is burning any bras,...

  3. Taking note of music books

If writing about music is like dancing about architecture, as Elvis Costello and others have sneered, then what does that make reading about music? Well, fun, for starters. Although Bowker Market Research reports that music books have steadily comprised between 2 and 2.5 percent of the non-fiction market since early 2010, they certainly seem to be enjoying a Baby Boomer-driven bubble right now.

  5. Kill your idols

Jesse Jarnow has a favorite rock band. Its name is Yo La Tengo. Jarnow has seen the Hoboken, N.J., trio perform 70 or 80 times and, as if it needs to be said, owns all its records — more than 20 — often in both digital and vinyl form. It's a deep admiration traced to Jarnow's early days as a New York City music writer, when he was assigned a feature on the band for the magazine Signal to Noise. While studying Yo La Tengo's brand of layered rock, which veers from lilting beauty to chaotic squall, often in the same album, he found a deep, personal appreciation.

  13. D.T. Max takes on the life of David Foster Wallace

D.T. Max knew what he was getting into when he decided to write a biography of David Foster Wallace. In March 2009, he published a long piece in the New Yorker about Wallace's suicide and the author's inability to finish "The Pale King," the novel left incomplete at the time of his death.

  15. Simplistic 'Chaplin' silences the magic of the Little Tramp

BROADWAY REVIEW: "Chaplin" at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre ... You might think that the trickiest and most daunting thing about a stage musical about Chaplin would be trying to replicate the actual, famous comedy sequences.
At the crucial emotional juncture of "Chaplin," the new musical about the Englishman who became, for a good while, the most famous movie star in the world, the character Charlie Chaplin sings of the pain that flows from declining interest in his work....

  17. Anti-AIDS rallying cry not really a memoir

For 45 years pop star Elton John has left the writing to lyricists such as Bernie Taupin, Gary Osborne and Tim Rice. A cursory examination of the few songs with his own lyrics, such as 1978's "Flintstone Boy," strongly suggests he made the right decision.
