7. Pacifica concert is the Candlelight prescription

Classical music is said to soothe the soul, but can it calm an upset stomach? Ellicott City resident Dr. Christopher Shih, a gastroenterologist who plays a little piano on the side, is likely to make listeners feel better when he appears as a guest artist for the Pacifica Quartet concert on Saturday, April 14 at 8 p.m. at Howard Community College's Smith Theatre.

  9. Psychedelic Spring: A new Grateful Dead documentary gives Deadheads a reason to tune in and turn on

Every spring, I listen to the Grateful Dead with fresh ears, not to the exclusion of everything else, but close to it. (I'm not alone in this. How many people in the Northeast associate the Dead's music with thaw, both literal and spiritual?)

  11. Review: Seoul Philharmonic is here but not quite there yet

The Seoul Philharmonic wants to be the one, not just the classical music soul of Seoul, but the first Asian orchestra to make it big on the international scene. At their Walt Disney Concert Hall debut Thursday night, the Koreans were — in a program of Debussy, Ravel and Tchaikovsky standards — exhilarating and, at their best, even awesome.

  15. Prolonging the Magic: Cake's John McCrea talks success, songwriting and irony

Cake is Generation X’s Cheap Trick. Everyone likes them, finds their music to be funny, ironic, danceable and perhaps not very deep, and few profess to be fanatical. They float above generic boundaries; if you’re narrow-minded, you can maintain your primary musical identity (metalhead, polka boy, indie rocker, etc.), and still like Cake. A dynamic live act, they make excellent, punchy records, and no one snickers when they cover semi-sacred ground, like Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” or the "Sesame Street" song “Mahna Mahna,” just like Cheap Trick performing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in its entirety makes you think, Yeah, that seems reasonable. And, like the quartet from Rockford, Ill., almost nobody will go out on a limb and say Cake’s music is exceptionally complex, a notion that’s patently false.

  21. Ravinia high on proven marquee names in upcoming schedule

The Ravinia Festival remains one of the nation’s heavyweight classical music impresarios even if it increasingly finds itself in the position of playing Goliath to the David of the Grant Park Music Festival at Millennium Park. Ho-hum symphonic fare dominates the classical programming. Pop music and other, more commercial lures seem to be pushing classical to the sidelines. Even Ravinia’s longtime blue-chip resident, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, now plays second fiddle to pop headliners, on some occasions.

  23. The classy act of making music
