The 2012 version of "Total Recall" is a remake that will go down in history as an example of how Hollywood usually screws up remakes.

The 2012 version of "Total Recall" is a remake that will go down in history as an example of how Hollywood usually screws up remakes. The 1990 original had Arnold Schwarzenegger, a twisty plot, a post-apocalyptic setting, lots of chasing and shooting,...

  3. Film review: The good, the bad and the alien

Early estimates indicate a virtual tie for the No. 1 position at the weekend box office. With two new releases enjoying equal success, I feel it's appropriate to take a look at both of them.

  5. Film review: 'Super 8' is super lame

Many early reviews have likened <strong>"Super 8"</strong> to "E.T.," Steven Spielberg's sci-fi classic from 1982. I suppose the comparison is inevitable. Both films star children, both films feature aliens, and Steven Spielberg is an executive producer of "Super 8."

  19. Choosing books for the holidays

Inevitably this holiday season, my mom will tick through her shopping list and say with a sigh, "Your dad wants a book." Since I was a kid, my mom has teased my dad about the predictablity of this ritual, which usually involves the purchase of a brick-sized tome of history. I love shopping for my dad. I don't buy what he asks for; I go with books I suspect he'll like. Bill Buford's "Heat," a memoir about Italian cooking, was an unexpected hit. The next year, I bought him a cookbook.
