    The first of two new exhibitions presented by the Amistad Center at the Wadsworth, <em>Collective Memories </em>explores societal concepts of race and culture &mdash; how they are created, distributed, and maintained historically &mdash; to help folks understand what it means to be African American. Organized thematically around three topics, people, places and things, the exhibit draws from the Amistad Center's permanent collection of art (including Ellis Walter Ruley's "Grapefruit Picking Time," c. 1930s, pictured), artifacts, manuscripts, documents, and other items from the 17th to the early 20th centuries.
