1. A generous response to the story of Dickens

There are rewards to writers for each genre of writing, be it history, poetry, biography, investigative reporters or columnists. The immediate response for weekly articles, while sometimes harsh, can be most gratifying. A recent column about the life of...

3. Left Behind: Novelist Peter Heller Imagines a Post-Apocalyptic America

We never seem to lose our appetite for stories about the end of the world. And novelist Peter Heller has written a good one. The Dog Stars reads a little like Cormac McCarthy’s The Road mixed with Mad Max, Contagion, Jack London and issues of Popular Aviation and Field and Stream. The book is set in the not-distant future, after some sort of catastrophic event has basically wiped away American civilization. It’s a post-apocalyptic novel, mixing a bit of horror over what humanity might become in times of extreme privation with a stoic male fantasy about solitude and vast stretches of unpopulated wilderness. Think of it as beach reading for the Armageddon-prepper set.

5. Many state parks will remain open

It was the vision of some and the collaboration of many that kept the Salton Sea Recreational Area and the Picacho Recreational Area opened beyond today.

9. More important than state of the art schools: State of the art teachers

I agree that state-of-the-art schools are something to aim for, but your letter writer left out the most important part of the ideal classroom: The person who sits behind the desk in the front of the room ("Baltimore needs state-of-the-art schools to...

11. 1,000 miles of the Yukon

Fog, thick as steam, swirls around the preparation area, as people and dogs scurry about, attending to myriad pre-race chores. It's minus 30 Fahrenheit this morning, but dry, and all the spectators are dressed in layers, some with only their eyes visible through their balaclavas and parka hoods.

13. 10 things you might not know about skin color

1 Melanin, the pigment that gives color to skin (and eyes) is produced in cells called melanocytes. Every person has about the same number of these cells, regardless of race, but those with darker skin have larger cells that produce more pigment. Melanin not only colors the skin but also protects it from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

19. 'The Grey' a Liam Neeson howler, in a good way -- 3 stars

The title "8 Million Ways to Die" was already taken, so "The Grey" had to settle for "The Grey," named for the plus-size wolves waging war on the desperate human survivors of an Alaskan wilderness plane crash. Tough situation. Frostbite. Wolf bite. Drowning. Falling from great heights. Harsh outcomes abound for both man and beast.

For the Community Arts Center
In a world full of change, it seems one thing remains the same: If you want to be you, be you. Oftentimes, artists find themselves creating works within the “traditional” definitions of their art form, or conforming to societal pressures. This...
