  11. 2011 Holiday Guide

Like the creeping tinsel at the mall, holiday shows in Chicago seem to start earlier each year. This season, it was “White Christmas” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire even before the trick-or-treaters had ventured forth from their stoops. But bear in mind that theaters know how much Chicago audiences love their seasonal entertainments. If, like me, you're an urban romantic in love with the classic downtown experience, this is the golden time of the year, full of family members enjoying the arts together and cramming in a live show between busy days and nights of shopping, eating and merrymaking.

  15. Pinning down Chicago artist Lilli Carre

Lille Carre is 29, petite, moon-faced and unassuming. She curls forward as she speaks. On a quiet morning in her Noble Square apartment, she speaks softly and gives off an air of frailty. It's not hard to picture her stepping out of one of her own creations. She is an illustrator, an animator and a cartoonist, and her characters are similarly ethereal and angular and look exhausted. They appear to be moments away from floating off into space. They are like her work: hard to pin down.

  19. Goro Miyazaki follows in his father's path in 'Poppy Hill' ★★★★

Is any animated feature produced by the Japanese treasure known as Studio Ghibli, responsible for "Spirited Away," "Ponyo" and others, capable of capturing a mass American audience's attention? Good question, especially in a box-office cycle dominated by "The Croods." So let's get it out of the way. The answer is, maybe not. There. Now we can talk about "From Up on Poppy Hill," one of the shimmering highlights of the year.
