  1. Words from past soothe modern tragedies

    Philadelphia Daily News
There are many kinds of desperation, as many as the stars above and the souls beneath them. The death of a child, the disintegration of a marriage, homes lost to floodwaters and whirlwinds, all of these things can drive you to -- and beyond -- the point...

  3. 'Epic': Animated film has slow start in box office abroad

The international box office for "Epic" is anything but so far. The animated movie from 20th Century Fox's Blue Sky Productions unit -- which focuses on a transformed teenager who befriends a group of misfits and fights rot-causing creatures -- has...

  5. 'The Chicago River' gets jazzed

The reversal of the Chicago River more than a century ago helped transform a polluted, disease ridden city into a sprawling, modern metropolis.

  9. An 'Epic' journey for Amanda Seyfried

  11. Ray Manzarek remembered the Doors in his books

When Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek died Monday, he left behind a musical legacy that included 15 singles that made Billboard's hot 100 list, including the songs "Light My Fire," "Waiting for the Sun," "Touch Me," "Riders on the Storm," and "People Are Strange." Less well known is his literary legacy, which included a memoir and two novels.

  13. Lyric Opera offers sterling cast in 'Rigoletto'

Lyric Opera Baltimore is wrapping up its comfort-food season with Verdi’s stirring drama of love, nastiness and misplaced loyalties, “Rigoletto.” The staging looked a little square and economical Friday night at the Modell Performing Arts Center, but it often sounded splendid; Sunday’s matinee ought to be even better.

  17. Isn't it ironic?

Just a note before I start. This opinion is not meant to be offensive to anyone nor is it meant to stereotype an entire group of people. It is simply what I've found to be true about most people who I've talked with about this subject. Again, this piece...

  19. His 'Sweet Home' Costa Mesa

Rock songwriters have long had love-hate relationships with their cities of origin. A browse through the lyrics of Paul Simon ("Nothing but the dead and dying back in my little town"), Bruce Springsteen ("Now Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores / Seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more") and others amounts to less than a nostalgic jaunt.

  21. 'Epic' can't see the forest for the plot ★★

The hopeful title of "Epic" suggests big things in a way that a more accurate title, such as "How to Train Your Hummingbird," would not. The animated result isn't bad. It's an adequate baby sitter. But where's the allure in telling the truth? Twentieth Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios present "Adequate"?

  23. Michael Robbins on reviewing

No one dreams of being a book reviewer when he grows up. You might dream of writing poems or novels or essays or even, if you are perennially picked last for teams in gym class, literary criticism (“We don't want Robbins, you can have an extra player”; “We don't want him, either!”). These forms have their glamour, even if only the novelist is much prized by the united malls of America. But as Samuel Johnson almost said, “No man but a blockhead ever wrote book reviews, except for money.” I have had the rare fortune to see my poetic aspirations realized and then some (though fame is a fickle food), but poetry don't pay the rent. Not that anyone's getting rich from writing about how unputdownable a thriller is.
