13. The Mark Twain House Celebrates the Gilded Age of Hartford

Before the devastating effects of the Great Depression, the country lounged in the perceived luxury of the Gilded Age. Economic growth after the Civil War attracted millions of immigrants to the country, where industries like railroads and manufacturing hit levels of success never before attained. This success, however, only masked societal issues which were pervasive in the burgeoning nation. Hartford's Mark Twain House in Hartford will open a new exhibit, The Gilded Age of Hartford (Twain came up with the phrase "Gilded Age" to describe this interesting era of American history), which looks back at the life and experiences of people and things existing in the Capitol City during the era.

  19. Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford Featuring the Work of Graphic Novelist Mark Siegel

Writing is frustrating work. Add pictures to the story, and watch your hair get even whiter with each passing pronoun. Author/illustrator Mark Siegel survived the process of creating a graphic novel, Sailor Twain, and he'll be appearing at (naturally) Hartford's Mark Twain House and Museum on Oct. 6 to talk about it. It's a serial work, published incrementally online over the course of weeks and months. But now the whole work — set in moody charcoal tones (pictured) and blending Victorian-era styles with progressive science fiction — will be released in paperback form this fall. It's received raves from — get this — author John Irving and MSNBC personality Rachel Maddow. Head to the Twain House for some art-fiction hybrid action.

  21. 8/8/2012-Human Ticks

When I think of parasites to represent parasitic groups, I think of the bloated deer tick to be the metaphor for the scum of all hate groups in America. They, like all hate groups, make my skin crawl.
