I hope the governor's bluffing with these 4,742 layoffs, particularly the state Department of Education and that nonsense about closing the vocational high schools. Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot and eating the seed corn, if I may be allowed to mix my metaphors. Even if it's only a threat, it's extreme. These students are our future if we ever want to have the family car fixed, have dinner in a good restaurant, get a haircut, a leaky sink fixed, or have anything welded in the future. And that's just some of the practical education these kids get.

For those of you living outside Connecticut, State Senator Edith Prague, 85, said this about a man about to go on trial for his alleged part in a crime involving rape and a triple homicide: "They should bypass the trial and take that second animal and hang him by his penis from a tree out in the middle of Main Street."

My wife and I watched "The Apprentice" the first couple of seasons when it was new. After that, we were bored with it and drifted away, probably to some other show we got bored with after two seasons.

I saw Arnold in person at a the Association of American Editorial Cartoonist's annual convention in California a few years ago. I was shocked at how short he was. He's as tall as I and he was wearing cowboy boots. I'm 5'8", but I'll bet Hollywood could make me look 6'3" in the movies.

If I thought the world was coming to an end Saturday, first thing this morning, I'd go to the Bentley/Rolls Royce dealership in Greenwich across from the train station and buy one of each. I would drive one and hook the other to the back with a tow bar.

For those of you living in states where the nanny culture is not in control of your everyday life, here's what's going on. The Democrats in Connecticut's House of Representatives have approved a bill that would attach warning labels to Internet dating services doing business in our state that will read:

Nothing is going to change in the Middle East until Hamas gives up its written charter that says Israel has no right to exist. Any country that can succesfully defend itself against invaders has a right to exist, something Israel's done many times, and the last time, it wound up with all the territories currently in dispute, so let's get really serious.

According to the Connecticut disaster Center, Connecticut ranks 42nd in the country for frequency of tornadoes. That's a relief to me. I grew up in Indiana, which seemed to rank first. I know that's not true, but every spring, it was a tornado warning, or watch, three times a week. Ironically, I'd never seen a funnel cloud in the Midwest. In fact, I haven't seen one anywhere except on TV, and of course in The Wizard of Oz.

This whole busway thing sounds like one of those Connecticut insider deals where somebody gets rich at taxpayer expense. Follow the money. I'll bet if you followed it far enough, you'd find some rich donor (or two) to both political parties in Connecticut who will profit. I'm just sayin'.

I'm not a big fan of the Connecticut Siting Council. They rammed super-hot high power lines deep into a quiet Middletown neighborhood right next to homes after a series of sham hearings. It was obvious they planned to do that even before the hearings started. They buried the power lines in parts of tony Fairfield County, of course, but Middlesex County was fair game for the unsightly towers.

I have no idea how the Connecticut Republican Party will ever be anything more than a minor party in this state. Connecticut is so overwhelmingly Democrat, that Republicans can only count on success in a few towns. Even when they capture the governor's mansion, their policies are thwarted by the Democratically controlled legislature. Which is the way it should be, given what these folks want to do. I mean, who's going to vote for a party that promises to lay off thousands? This ain't Wisconsin, or Ohio.

  23. A Shared Prospect

Joe Namnoun says he "chased" the house for 20 years. Built in 1980 by renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern, it stands amid historic mansions on Prospect Avenue in Hartford — the result of the rare subdividing of an estate there and possibly the only building lot to become available along that stretch of Prospect in a century.
