1. 'Hold Fast' by Blue Balliett

Hold fast to dreams
Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Those words from "Dreams," a Langston Hughes poem, infuse Blue Balliett's newest novel. At the start of the book, Balliett notes that by the end of the 2012...

3. CDOT tries coordination to ease road work headaches

Resurfacing a street or replacing a cracked sidewalk, then digging up the work a short time later to install new utility lines followed by making the paving repairs again — and perhaps even a third time — is a time-honored Chicago tradition.

5. Jeff Lemire, super writer

On page 12 of issue No. 1 of DC Comics' latest reiteration of "Constantine," which tells the ongoing story of John Constantine — a.k.a. Hellblazer, the publisher's three-decade-old, morally slippery sorcerer/sleuth to the occult world (played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 "Constantine" movie) — an airline stewardess explodes. Sure, she slips poison into Constantine's drink just before exploding; and sure, she kind of chants something to herself in the plane's lavatory, resulting in self-immolation. But in one panel she explodes; and in the next, Constantine, stone faced, is straightening his tie in the lavatory mirror, apparently unimpressed.

7. Rosenthal: Roger Ebert wrote a business script worth following

We all knew Roger Ebert. Even those who knew Roger only through his words and insights felt a bond. That was one of Ebert's many gifts, and with his death leaving such a profound void, it is easy to overlook all that we still have from him.

11. Best milk for cheesemaking

Q: Since milk and cream are ultra-pasteurized I am having a hard time making ricotta and Greek cheese. Do you have any suggestions or do you know where I can purchase pasteurized (not ultra) milk or cream? I know raw milk is not sold in the U.S. I hope you can help.

13. Vanilla 101

Q: Can you please tell me the difference between powdered vanilla and liquid vanilla. Is one stronger? Can you only use the powdered for cooking? I ruined a "no cook" icing recipe using the powdered form and have been afraid to use it ever since. Also are some liquid vanillas stronger than others? Like what you get from Mexico? What about cheap ones verses more expensive ones in the grocery store? Lots of questions — hope you are able to answer all 5 of them.
