9. Dan Brown's 'Inferno' has heat but no warmth

Some years ago, I was on a book reviewing panel when someone in the audience asked what we, the panelists, thought of "The Bridges of Madison County," which was then a fixture on bestseller lists. We hemmed and hawed, tried to talk around the question, until our moderator acknowledged that, most likely, none of us had read the book.

  13. Survivor found 17 days after Bangladesh garment factory collapse

Workers clearing rubble from the scene of the multistory garment factory that collapsed in Bangladesh killing more than 1,000 workers at last count and injuring around 2,000 more found a woman alive and rescued her Friday, 17 days after the tragedy. The Associated Press reported she was found on the second floor; the New York Times said she was found in a Muslim prayer room in the basement of the building, which afforded her oxygen and enough space to stand up. In any event, she was uninjured, an official on the scene said, but taken to a hospital to be examined. [AP via Los Angeles Times] [NYT]

  17. Gary Stein: Commendable, sure, but not "heroic"

  19. Dodgers' bosses get points for patience

I don't know Mark Walter, the Guggenheim guy who runs the Dodgers. We had one phone conversation, and I'd rather talk to Jamie McCourt. I've written off Stan Kasten as a blowhard, and while I really like Ned Colletti, we have our disagreements. But...
