7. The 26th Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival Begins This Weekend at Various Locations Around Hartford

For its 26th spin around the projector, the Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival spreads out among some of the area's best movie-viewing locations, including Trinity College's Cinestudio (the site of most of the screenings), Real Art Ways, Spotlight Theatres on Front Street and the CT Science Center. They've also tweaked the schedule a bit, with shorter Mon.-Tues. night programming and a whole night of women's short films. The films themselves, from all over the worlds, are as solid as ever; check out Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska's In the Name Of (Fri., 9 p.m. at Real Art Ways, following the GAZE happy hour). Or head to see The Go Doc Project (pictured, Sat., 7:30 p.m. at Spotlight Theatres, Front Street) by American filmmaker Cory James Krueckeberg, about a newly minted college grad faking a documentary project about a go-go dancer, for love.

  23. Real Art Ways in Hartford Examines Fungus as an Artistic Medium

Artist Phil Ross and Connecticut based mycologist Connie Borodenko will mediate a conversation about fungus (see above) as an artistic medium and sustainable architecture at Real Art Ways on March 16. Borodenko is an expert in mycology (the scientific study of fungi) and Ross specializes in art driven by a longtime love of biology. They'll discuss fungi's role in art, and the ways it can be adapted as an architectural medium. The results are stunningly well-crafted objects that are very much alive with energy. Free, open to all ages. — Chris Burns
