Baltimore residents get into holiday spirit at monument lighting: At the 41st annual lighting of Baltimore's Washington Monument, another winter season in Charm City was launched. Thousands looked skyward as lights were turned on and a finale of fireworks burst into the air.

Remembering Pearl Harbor: One of four vessels owned by Historic Ships of Baltimore, the Coast Guard cutter Taney was on patrol in Honolulu on Dec. 7, 1941, protecting a vital power plant as the invasion of Pearl Harbor unfolded.

Tea Party leader DeMint to retire:  Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, one of the most influential leaders of the tea party wing of the party, will retire in January to head a conservative think tank in Washington.
