On Wednesday morning, the gay rights group Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois each filed a lawsuit against Cook County Clerk David Orr, saying the state’s ban on issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples violates the Illinois Constitution.

This marks a new front in the battle over gay marriage in Illinois, which up to this point has been waged legislatively in the statehouse in Springfield.
