Two men were stabbed and one later died from his wounds in the Avondale neighborhood Saturday, police said.

The two were approached by a group about 3:45 a.m. Saturday on the 4000 block of West Melrose Street -- about a block from the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Pulaski Road -- and then stabbed, police said.

A 24-year-old man is listed in critical condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and the other, also 24 years old, died about 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the dead man as Anthony Diaz, but didn't say where he was from.

As of 11:45 p.m. the Cook County medical examiner's office wasn't notified of the death.

Police didn't say what prompted the stabbing.
