A Lake in the Hills man attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign died this morning after being severely injured in a hit-and-run collision late Friday, authorities said.
Anthony G. Pauls, 22, was declared dead at 7:54 a.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, accordding to the Champaign County coroner’s office. Charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, driving under the influence, and other charges was Albert Fleming, 20, of Champaign, according to Urbana police.
Pauls was hit by a vehicle about 11:50 p.m. near 200 West University Avenue, and the vehicle fled the scene, but was stopped a few blocks west, according to police news releases.
As officers were responding to the area where Pauls was hit, a police sergeant saw Fleming’s vehicle, which had heavy damage, police said.
The sergeant said the driver had a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath,” and admitted to drinking when his vehicle hit Pauls, police said in a release this afternoon. Two other people in the car were charged, one with marijuana, the other with having an open bottle of alcohol in the car, according to police.
Fleming is being held without bond in the Champaign County Jail, according to the jail’s Website.
