Beer snow cones
DMK Burger Bar cranks out this adult version of the summer classic
A tall icy one: DMK Burger has been cranking out its adult version of the summer classic for $3 since early August. They combine frozen O'Fallon Wheach (a wheat beer with peach notes) with house-made blood-orange syrup and shaved ice. (Terrence Antonio James/Chicago Tribune)
"(The syrup) is obviously going to give it a pink or reddish tint," says DMK Kitchen Manager Sarah Heintz. "A snow cone is shaved ice with a really heavy syrup squeezed over it, so we wanted to make it reminiscent of an actual snow cone. The two flavors add another level and depth than just frozen beer."
This snow cone has all the characteristics you remember blissfully enjoying as a kid on those blistering summer days: sweet, tongue-staining chunks of ice and that pool of concentrated sugar in the bottom of that paper cone. Now grown-ups can have childhood nostalgia and an adult beverage in the same cup. 2954 N. Sheffield Ave., 773-360-8686
