Playing Rockford brings out the best in Michael Davies.
Davies scored two goals 46 seconds apart in the first period and Kevin Connauton scored the game-winner as the Wolves held on for a 3-2 victory over the IceHogs on Sunday before a crowd of 9,613 at Allstate Arena.
Davies has seven goals in 18 regular-season games against the IceHogs and 24 in 123 games against everybody else.
"Everyone has their team that they always feast of off," Davies said. "I just get lucky every time. I love playing these guys."
The goals came a night after Davies missed on a breakaway that could have put the Wolves ahead 3-1 in the third period against Milwaukee. He also missed a shootout attempt as the Wolves fell 3-2.
"All last night and today I was thinking about that," Davies said. "If I score that last night, it's 3-1. instead they go back down and make it 2-2. I really wanted to bear down (Sunday) on my chances."
After blowing third-period leads in consecutive games against the Admirals over the weekend, the Wolves hung on against the IceHogs. Joe Cannata made 36 saves in his first start since Feb. 5, including a stop on Brandon Pirri in front with 28 seconds left.
He also survived a goal-mouth scramble after Ben Smith missed a wide-open net with six minutes remaining. The ensuing battle for the puck resulted in a video review that upheld the no-goal call.
"There was a scrum and I think I blacked out after that," Cannata said. "I just went back there in desperation and was lucky to keep it out."
