NEWPORT NEWS -- After a shock to the system in the first 20 seconds, Bethel went wild with 38 unanswered points as the Bruins defeated Woodside 45-19 Thursday night at Todd Stadium.

Woodside scored on its first snap as Trey Reed broke off a draw and ran 82 yards down the home sidelines to put the Wolverines up 7-0 just 20 seconds into the game.

But the Bruins replied. The Bruins called a timeout on their first possession and started the scoring binge. Bethel marched 51 yards on seven plays, with quarterback Trey Jackson pushing his way in from the 1-yard line to tie the game at the 7:08 mark.

Bethel broke the game open with a 25-point second quarter. Brian Moore started it on the first play of the quarter for Bethel, breaking a 42-yard run to put the Bruins ahead 13-7 with 11:38 left in the half.

The Bethel defense stepped into action as Nicholas Clark returned an interception 66 yards to the Woodside 20. Three plays later, Jackson scored on his second 1-yard run of the half to take a 19-7 lead.

A quick two-score splurge in the final 2:39 enabled Bethel to take a 32-7 lead into the locker room. Jihad Hudson scored on a 9-yard run, and Jackson connected with Jesse Williams on a 37-yard scoring pass where he outjumped a Woodside defender with 8.6 seconds left.

Hudson started the second-half scoring for the Bruins on a 24-yard run, capping a six-play, 61-yard drive to take a 38-7 lead with 8:56 left.

Woodside got back into the scoring column on the ensuing drive as Tyris Walker pushed his way in from the 1 on a fourth-and-goal situation. That cut the margin to 38-13 with 1:59 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth, Woodside struck again on a fourth-and-goal play as Quincy Jones pushed his way in from the 4 to finish a 16-play, 61-yard drive. The 2-point pass failed and Woodside trailed 38-19 with 6:03 left.

After a 48-yard Alex Wilson punt for Bethel pinned the Wolverines on their 3, the defense of the Bruins struck again as Jordan Younger picked off a Devin Gray pass and returned it 21 yards for the final touchdown. Bethel followed with another interception, Clark’s second of the night, to ice the game with 1:24 left.

Moore and Hudson each topped the 100-yard mark for the Bruins, running for 142 and 101, respectively.

Reed nearly hit that for Woodside (5-5, 5-4), running for 99 yards. But the Wolverines’ streak of winning seasons was snapped at four.
