1. White House fights back on IRS as GOP keeps up pressure

WASHINGTON — A senior White House aide insisted Sunday that President Obama learned only from news reports that an IRS office had singled out dozens of tea party organizations and other conservative groups for questionable scrutiny, while Republicans vowed to investigate any White House involvement in the growing scandal.

  5. IRS scandal a reminder of how I learned about The Chicago Way

The Internal Revenue Service scandal now devouring the Obama administration — the outrageous use of the federal taxing authority to target tea party and other conservatives — certainly makes for meaty partisan politics. But this scandal is...

  7. White House is lying or clueless

The scandals at the White House in the last few days and the lack of knowing what was going on does not wash ("IRS head forced to go," May 16). The IRS in Ohio targets conservative groups, but the interim head of the IRS located in Washington gets...

  9. The scandalously premature diagnosis of a cancer on the presidency

If it makes me a media lackey or a tail-wagging lap dog for President Barack Obama to hold out for, you know, actual evidence that he had anything to do with the various and glaring misbehavior, blundering and butt-covering in the governmental ranks before I begin invoking Watergate and floating the possibility of impeachment, then so be it.

  11. The Nixon false equivalence

"The only thing new in the world is the history you don't know," said Harry Truman, who made it his task to absorb a lot of it. Many people who have not followed his example are not averse to using what little they do know, with the inadvertent effect of exposing how much they have to learn.

  13. IRS not only agency in disarray

This is probably the tip of the iceberg ("Report finds disarray at IRS," May 15). Most government employees believe in large government where can you work and get a pension that you do not pay into and have health care that you do not pay into as well as paid vacation, sick time, lots of holidays and never have the department that you work in audited or held accountable for your performance because your union protects you.

  15. The president's redacted truth, subjunctive outrage

WASHINGTON - Note to GOP re Benghazi: Stop calling it Watergate, Iran-contra, bigger than both, etc. First, it might well be, but we don't know. History will judge. Second, overhyping will only diminish the importance of the scandal if it doesn't meet presidency-breaking standards. Third, focusing on the political effects simply plays into the hands of Democrats desperately claiming that this is nothing but partisan politics.

  17. LETTER: Tempest In A Teapot

The wing-nuts are in their glory. Between the IRS focusing on tea party groups and the Justice Department collecting some AP reporters' phone number records, it's enough to make this classy anti-government bunch whoop with glee. Instead of fantasizing...
