1. Phil Vettel: Four stars for Grace

Given chef Curtis Duffy's curriculum vitae — his work at Alinea, the two Michelin stars awarded to Avenues restaurant on Duffy's watch — there really wasn't any question whether Grace, Duffy's first solo effort, would be good. Just how good.

  5. Las Vegas: Cupid drawing back his bow all over Sin City

This Valentine's Day, a variety of special events in Las Vegas will cater to couples, but singles can mingle (in search of that special someone) at activities created just for them. 9. Surprise: Two new tires should go on rear

Q: I made an appointment at a 'chain' tire store for two new front tires for my front-wheel-drive minivan. Not till I arrived was I told the new tires had to go on the rear if there was significant difference between the amount of tread on the new tires compared to the old. I said I was replacing the front tires only because I'd experienced poor traction in several inches of snow, so putting the new tires on the rear would provide no benefit. We inspected the tires and the salesman concluded there was a significant difference, and said company policy dictated the new tires had to go on the rear. (By my estimate, the existing tires had about 25 percent tread remaining, and would have passed state inspection.) A different tire store granted my request, but only after I signed a form indicating I was taking this action against their recommendation. Other sources support the rear-wheels claim, but I disagree.

  19. Travel tips from Los Angeles Times readers

Go ahead — we dare you to read this list of travel tips and not clap your hand to your head and say, "Why didn't I think of that?" When we asked readers to contribute their best tips for travel, we were overwhelmed by the number and comsengen (a word we just coined that's short for "common sense genius") of the ideas. Do you always forget your phone charger in your hotel room? Do you wonder why, when your flight is canceled, you end up standing in long lines while others whisk off to their new flight? And how in the world do some people easily convert whatever the local currency is while you're standing there doing math in your head? Here are some of the hows and whys that can make your travel easier. So grab a cup of coffee and a couple of aspirin for the headache you'll get from smacking yourself on the head. And if you have a tip to contribute, send it to travel@latimes.com.
