  1. John Shirreffs' move east is sad sign for Southern California racing

John Shirreffs should not depart the Southern California thoroughbred racing scene without a salute. So cup your right hand to your forehead and read on. There will be no brass bands playing when Shirreffs leaves. That's partly because it will be...

  3. Newton: Villaraigosa's legacy

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa delivered his final State of the City address last week, and as these speeches go, it was fairly typical. He boasted of progress in environmental protection and public safety, both genuine hallmarks of his work and legitimate sources of pride. He engaged in a bit of false humility: "I have been fortunate and blessed to partner with you." Villaraigosa has some good qualities, but humility isn't one of them.

  5. The Greuel-Garcetti conundrum

When I met them at their home on election day in March, Don and Prudy Schultz of Van Nuys had a Wendy Greuel sign planted in their frontyard.
When I met them at their home on election day in March, Don and Prudy Schultz of Van Nuys had a Wendy Greuel sign planted in their frontyard. But today, it's gone. Don jerked it out of the ground as if it were a weed, and got rid of it. "Just wanted...

  7. Is Prime Healthcare settling scores with union?

In recent years, Prime Healthcare has built a reputation as a take-no-prisoners company willing to run roughshod over patients and employees alike in its quest for profits — $283 million on revenue of $1.6 billion in 2010, according to a financial statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

  11. Bill Rosendahl, happy warrior

Robert Kennedy was a young Bill Rosendahl's hope for the White House, but Kennedy's rival, Hubert Humphrey, practiced the "happy warrior" style of politics that represents the principles Rosendahl has embraced. As he leaves the Los Angeles City Council after two terms, his eight years in office (and a diagnosis of cancer, now in remission) have not extinguished Rosendahl's cheerfulness, but they have given his warrior side an instruction booklet.

  13. Newton: Clear the Expo Line tracks

Few tensions more regularly complicate the political life of Los Angeles than those between neighborhood residents and "outsiders" wanting to alter those neighborhoods for what they see as the larger good.

  15. For notorious L.A. scam artist, the thoughts counted

Of all the scam artists to set foot in Los Angeles, one of the most notorious was A. Victor Segno, who duped thousands of people around the world into sending him $1 a month to belong to his Segno Success Club. In return, he promised to send out brain waves twice a day to help members achieve success.

  19. One drug connection that everyone ignores

Illegal drugs by the tons are smuggled into California each year by sea, by land and by air. Cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin are either produced in or pass through Mexico, where 50,000 people have been killed in the last six years in an...

  21. Man About Town: Our view of the cosmos from an L.A. hilltop

Do I turn you on to cool stuff or what? Last week, a great shave. This week, the cosmos. There isn't really anyplace I won't take you. OK, I won't take you to Chuck E. Cheese's — that'd just be cruel, pepperoni in the very corpuscles of the place. But any other destination is up for grabs, including the far outer suburbs of human understanding.
