  19. Geraldine (Gerry) Louise Shuha Blissell McGinn, Seven Springs

Geraldine (Gerry) Louise Shuha Blissell McGinn was  born in McKeesport on Feb. 8, 1925. As a young girl Gerry was so shy her parents enrolled her in dance lessons to boost her confidence. It worked so well that she performed her routine to all, so the lessons soon ended. From there she began to study the violin, which led to a lifelong love of music. She walked from her home in Port Vue to McKeesport to take violin lessons. In 1943 she graduated from McKeesport High School, and in 1946 she graduated from McKeesport School of Nursing. As  Gerry began to study toward her BSN, she left home to attend Cornell University in New York, where she stayed for several months. When she returned to complete her degree at The University of Pittsburgh, Gerry met her future husband John (Jack) George Blissell. He was the love of her life. The two married on Sept. 9, 1950. Jack was a registered professional civil engineer in the states of Pennsylvania and Texas. During this time Gerry also served as the president of The Women’s Auxiliary, Pittsburgh Chapter, Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. Both worked full time, went to college and even valet parked cars at Forbes Field in Oakland. After nine years of marriage, they had a son, William (Billy). Tragically, Jack died suddenly on Dec. 13, 1961, leaving Gerry a young widow with a 2-year-old son to raise alone. Gerry continued her education and received a masters of education from Pitt. She held many positions in her career, including instructor, assistant director and director. She worked at Shadyside and McKeesport Hospitals and finished working at CCAC South Campus in 1985, retiring a full professor. At this time Gerry married William (Bill) Joseph McGinn. They moved to Florida soon after.  While in Florida, Gerry kept her nursing license active through continuing education, although she never worked as a nurse again. She was an active member in The Lake Placid Garden Club, and served as the club photographer for many years. Designing arrangements to compete in flower shows also afforded her much enjoyment. Music was always a passion, as was crewel embroidery, textile painting and antiquing. Gerry belonged to Highland Country Club, Youghiogheny Country Club and Lake Placid Country Club in Florida, and enjoyed golf at all three. Gerry remained in Florida until 2007, at which time she returned to Pennsylvania to live in Elizabeth Township with her son Bill and his family. In 2008 they moved to Seven Springs Resort, where Gerry quickly became something of a celebrity. She held court in the Slopeside Restaurant once a week, enjoying hot fudge sundaes with friends. Gerry greatly loved all the neighbors and their children, treating them all like family. Everyone called her “Grammy,” which gave her a real sense of belonging. She cared for all around her, and her generous nature was evident by the gifts she carefully wrapped, and the thoughtful notes she took pleasure in writing. Gerry is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Antoinette Moravec Shuha, both husbands, John Blissell and William McGinn, a sister Marie Appel and a niece, Donna Scanlon. She is survived by her son William Blissell, his wife Arlene, still living in Seven Springs, a grandson Cameron of Shadyside, and a granddaughter Grace of Salt Lake City, Utah, and a niece Susan Appel of Alabama.  A private memorial service will be held for close family and friends.
