  5. St. Mary's troubles are temporary, but its appeal is enduring

    The effective resignation Tuesday of St. Mary's College of Maryland President Joseph R. Urgo undoubtedly will come as a disappointment to the many students, faculty and alumni who shared his vision for the school. St. Mary's is unique among the state's public colleges and universities in its deep commitment to liberal arts education that prepares young people to think critically and creatively about the world around them. Mr. Urgo's departure won't change that, nor will it diminish the school's appeal for students who want to learn in the kind of intensive, intellectually stimulating environment the college offers.

The "mess" that Coppin confronts stems mainly from continuing vestiges of de jure segregation that it and the three other Maryland historically black colleges and universities still face.   8. Tough love for Coppin

    Coppin State University is a mess, and the problems go well beyond its abysmal six-year graduation rate of 15 percent. A report to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents by a committee assigned to study the school in the wake of former President Reginald Avery's departure found massive mismanagement, inefficiency and indifference. The state puts more resources per student into Coppin than any other institution in the university system, and it gets the least return. That's bad for the taxpayers, but it's worse for the students whose dreams of advancement go unfulfilled. Big changes are clearly needed.
