1. Connecticut's Oscar Favorites From Those In The Know

The Academy Awards bring out the critic in everyone. It starts when the nominations are announced — "Whaddya mean, Ben Affleck wasn't nominated?" — and lasts long after Oscar night. That annual ritual takes place Sunday night and will be televised starting at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. (That's the actual ceremony; the red carpet fashion show starts at 7 p.m.) To give a little inside perspective to the glitzy festivities, we thought we'd ask a few Connecticut residents — people whose lives revolve around the entertainment industry — producers, directors, cinema managers, actors, costumers — about the Oscars and the 2012 movie year in general. What impressed them? What trends did they notice? Who should win? Who will win? Let's let the experts riff ...

  5. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows — the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and...

  7. Now for real insight into Oscars -- by the guilds

The academy liked "Argo," but not its director, Ben Affleck. The Directors Guild of America nominated Affleck, but couldn't find room for "Silver Linings Playbook" auteur David O. Russell, who, naturally, received an Oscar nomination for direction....

  9. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

  13. Film review: 'Amour' is wonderfully complicated

Having already won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and several of the most important critics' awards, Michael Haneke's “Amour” has scored an unexpected five Oscar nominations. It's unusual for the usually ghettoized European art films to score anything beyond the Foreign Language category, plus maybe one or two nominations in the general categories. The Oscars belong to Hollywood; and (not surprisingly) Hollywood tends to like the same sorts of movies that Hollywood makes.
