1. Dance review: L.A. Dance Festival returns to boost homegrown dance

The L.A. Dance Festival materialized in early 2012 out of a frankly chauvinistic fervor to highlight the best homegrown companies together in performance. In unity there is strength, the thinking goes -- although sampler programs, with their 10-minute snatches of choreography, have inherent weaknesses.

  9. 'Pippin' makes long-awaited return to Broadway

If you’re a community theater regular, or even attended high school or college musicals, you’re likely familiar with the lively, foot-tappin’ tunes of “Pippin.” It’s the story of a young prince, son of the French King Charlemagne (King Charles), and his search for his place in the world.

Condense Doug Varone’s elongated commentary about his choreographic processes down to his most significant insights, and it would be these: that his dances are kinetic artwork about human passions, and that every single move has a carefully crafted context.

  15. Review: Long Beach Opera charts 'The Fall of the House of Usher'

Philip Glass is prolific beyond all understanding – and he keeps cranking out pieces at a clip that even his own record label, Orange Mountain Music, can’t keep up with. What that means is that there are lots of opportunities for enterprising outfits large, small and in-between to sift through Glass’ massive piles of score paper in order to score a regional premiere.

  21. To Glorya Kaufman, the art of dance is a gift on several levels

Tall, sinewy women, their necks thin and erect, mingle in wispy dresses on the arms of broad-shouldered men under the twinkling white lights of the canopied back patio at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons. As dusk fades and cocktails are served, the black-tie crowd moves with a particular rhythmic elegance. Maybe that's because some of the country's biggest names in dance are here. There are Debbie Allen, Diavolo Dance Theater's Jacques Heim, choreographer and one-time Joffrey prima ballerina Jodie Gates, as well as Complexions Contemporary Ballet co-founder and dancer Desmond Richardson.
