  1. VOD Spotlight: Gerard Butler and all-star cast in “Playing For Keeps”

    Channel Guide Magazine
Playing for Keeps had its start on a playing field — a local baseball field in Encino, Calif., where assistant Little League coach Jonathan Mostow met screenwriter Robbie Fox, who happened to be the team’s head coach. Fox had an idea to...

  3. On Demand/DVD New Releases March 4-10

    Channel Guide Magazine
It is an interesting week for On Demand/DVD New Releases, not a lot of big-name titles coming out, but the total number of films being released is more than we usually see. For the younger set, there's Barney, the Care Bears, Thomas and Friends, and...

  5. 'Southpaw' gets up off the mat with the Weinstein Co.

EXCLUSIVE: “Southpaw,” the Antoine Fuqua movie about a boxer whose life takes some rough turns, has followed a path not unlike that of its hero. DreamWorks was going to make the gritty drama back in 2011, then dropped it. Soon after, MGM...

  7. 'Playing for Keeps'

Gerard Butler's charisma does much - if ultimately not enough overall - for this comedy-drama, as he plays a former soccer star whose personal and professional lives have taken downturns. He tries to put both back on track as he attempts to win back his...

  9. 'Chasing Mavericks'

In the same manner as "Soul Surfer" not that long ago, this drama tells the true, earnest story of a young person pitted against nature ... the wet brand of it, more specifically. Jonny Weston plays Jay Moriarity, a surfer determined to conquer one of...

  15. 'Movie 43' wasn't named after number of laughs ★ 1/2

"Movie 43" is a collection of one-joke short films strung together as a feature, movies built seemingly built around this guiding directive: Find big-name stars and see how far "out there" they'll go for a laugh.

  17. The Sunday Conversation: Michael Apted keeps 'Up' series up and running

Director Michael Apted is known for such diverse films as "Gorillas in the Mist," "Coal Miner's Daughter" and the James Bond romp "The World Is Not Enough," but it's the "Up" series of documentaries following a small group of Britons every seven years, starting at age 7, that carries his most distinctive signature. His latest entry, "56 Up," exploring their lives well into middle age, is now at the Nuart Theatre. And at the DGA Awards on Feb. 2, Apted (British-born and now a citizen of both Britain and the U.S.) is slated to receive the Directors Guild of America's Robert B. Aldrich Award in honor of his tenure as guild president from 2003 to 2009.

  19. Reel Critics: This 'Playing' is no keeper

"Playing for Keeps" employs every cliché in the PG-13 romantic comedy playbook. But the comedy is in short supply as the laughs prove to be few and far between. The end result is a big, steaming bowl of romantic mush with little connection to the relationship realities of anyone in the audience.
