1. Cannes honcho Thierry Fremaux is Hollywood's inside man

When Baz Luhrmann’s "The Great Gatsby" raises the curtain on the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, it will serve, among other things, as an indication that the love affair between the festival and Hollywood is alive and well — much more than the last time Luhrmann opened Cannes, 12 years ago, with "Moulin Rouge." Back then, relations between Cannes and Tinseltown had hit something of a low, with few studio films of the late ’90s making the trek to the Croisette ("Beyond Rangoon," anyone?). When he joined Cannes in 2001, festival director Thierry Fremaux was immediately tasked by fest president Gilles Jacob with a peacemaking mission to the West Coast, and the decade since has been one of the richest for le cinema Americain on the Riviera — even if the biggest Cannes-launched Oscar winner of recent years was a French production: "The Artist."

In the new sci-fi movie "Oblivion," Earth's most precious resource is Tom Cruise. But running a close second (spoiler alert) is water. Aliens want it. All of it. This is old hat, science fiction-wise. In "The War of the Worlds," H.G. Wells had...

  15. Jewelers seek out red carpet exposure

It comes by Brink's truck and is hand-delivered by security guards. It is served up on silver platters and in lighted glass vitrines at chi-chi cocktail parties. The finest jewelry in the world is in Hollywood during the weeks leading up to the Golden Globes and Oscars. 17. 'Pain & Gain': Why is it so hard for directors to shed their skin?

If you follow directors' careers, you’ve often heard how hard it is for a so-called small filmmaker to go big. A few, like Christopher Nolan, have done it, evolving from intimate indies to studio tent poles. But it’s a trick infrequently attempted and even less frequently pulled off.
