1. Human Rights fest docs convey hard truths

Sometimes a number is shocking enough to stop you cold. In filmmaker Dawn Porter's documentary "Gideon's Army," which takes an in-depth look at the professional grind experienced by public defenders (playing at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Siskel Film...

  3. Amazon pilots (Part 3): The comedies

In two previous posts, I discussed the Amazon pilots, a slate of proposed series by the cyberspace bookseller turned virtual moving-picture studio, now streaming online for viewer comment and ratings. 5. 'Argo' producers show confidence in Affleck, even if Oscar didn't

Producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov had no idea who was going to direct "Argo." "Maybe I was going to, maybe Grant would, maybe somebody else," Clooney said. "We didn't know." But when Ben Affleck called Clooney and Heslov's Detroit hotel in early 2011 while they were filming "Ides of March," the producers had made their decision when they hung up the phone an hour later.

  7. SAG Awards 2013: 'Argo' a go-go; Day-Lewis an Oscar frontrunner

"Argo" took home a single prize at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, but it was the one that mattered most. Winning the trophy for performance by a cast in a motion picture, Ben Affleck's CIA drama solidified its status as the front-runner in an Oscar race that had been muddled for weeks. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" nabbed two of the top acting prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis was named lead actor for his performance as the 16th president, while Tommy Lee Jones was named actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Rep. Thaddeus Stevens. But the film's momentum in the Oscar best picture race has been stalled by its SAG cast loss and by its defeat at the hands of "Argo" at Saturday night's Producers Guild Awards.

A major factor in the current film-awards season, director and star Ben Affleck's superbly staged drama is the true story of a CIA effort to get several American diplomats out of Iran during the late-1970s hostage crisis.

  13. Oscars and American history: True, or true enough?

A modest proposal: Movies exploring some aspect of American history, such as “Argo,” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” should leave off the “based on a true story” or “inspired by true events” language and stick to what “Lincoln” screenwriter Tony Kushner advocates: a clear, simple and proud declaration of “historical fiction.”

  19. SAG Awards 2013: 'Argo' cast storms backstage after big win

You would think nothing could surprise multi-hyphenate Ben Affleck after he'd promoted his CIA thriller "Argo" for the past five months, but the actor-director-producer was clearly stunned Sunday night when the movie nabbed the ensemble prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A few weeks ago, the Oscar race looked wide open. The stately, historical "Lincoln" seemed like the safe and likely choice, with the provocative "Zero Dark Thirty" and the quirky and inspiring "Silver Linings Playbook" very much in the mix for the Academy Award for best picture.
