1. 'Tannhauser' production booed for using Nazi imagery

A new production of Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhauser" in Germany was reportedly booed by members of the audience who were apparently upset over the use of Nazi imagery in the staging. The opera opened Saturday at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf.

  3. 'Simon Killer' gets a reprieve

"Simon Killer" was among the most divisive entries at the Sundance Film Festival when it premiered there in 2012. While it struck some as a chilling, unblinking look at the descent into violence and madness of a young American in Paris, to others the film was hard to take. One critic recently called it simply "icky."

  5. 'Django Unchained' pays homage to Wagner's 'Siegfried'

When Los Angeles Opera presented its new production of Richard Wagner's "Siegfried" a few years ago at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the packed house included the usual assortment of donors and local opera buffs. Nestled somewhere in the orchestra section was an odd man out: Quentin Tarantino, the filmmaker whose hyper-modern and manic sensibilities would seem at odds with slow-moving 19th century German opera.

  9. 'Prometheus' seeks out classical music in deep space

In space, no one can hear you scream — but everyone can hear the classical music loud and clear.
In space, no one can hear you scream — but everyone can hear the classical music loud and clear. Science-fiction movies have had a long affinity for classical music, and the relationship is a fascinating and complex one. In "Prometheus," Ridley...

  11. DVD review: 'Melancholia' is a multilayer metaphor

This strange film from Lars von Trier (“Breaking the Waves,” “Dogville”), which topped my favorites list for 2011, is now available on Blu-ray disc and DVD. It's an impossible movie to categorize sensibly: One can call it “Ingmar Bergman meets Michael Bay,” which is partly true and partly ridiculous. It bounced up and down within my Top 10 but ended up in first place because it haunted my thoughts more than “The Tree of Life” or “Take Shelter” or any of the year's other deep-dish releases. It functions as a multilayer metaphor, allowing several different readings, none of them clearly “right” or “wrong.”

  13. Film review: 'Melancholia' never felt so good

Lars von Trier has long rivaled Hamlet as the most melancholy of melancholy Danes. With “Melancholia,” his new film, he makes it official.

  17. At the Capitol Theatre: 'Melancholia' sinks deep into heady territory

Depression finally seems to have brought out the best in Lars von Trier: “Melancholia” is his strongest work in a while, a devastatingly beautiful, operatic mixture of all his signature themes and visual schemes.

This is, after all, a von Trier film. But the director portends his characters’ fate with a lengthy, wordless prelude: a series of sumptuously photographed, super-slowmotion images of sadness and frustration accompanied by the swelling overture from Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde.” We see Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg struggle against the elements, against themselves. 23. The Contenders: Kirsten Dunst of 'Melancholia'

As Justine, the complicated young bride at the center of Lars von Trier's apocalyptic meditation on depression, "Melancholia," Kirsten Dunst is called upon to convey great depths of anguish with very little dialogue. But Dunst, 29, delivers such a nuanced, polished performance that it's easy to see Justine's grief living behind her eyes as the beautiful woman with the doomed future fumbles her way through her lavish nuptials, leaving a trail of fractured relationships in her wake.
