  1. Oscar Nominations for 2012

All my friends think I wake up early for the Oscar nominations. It’s baffling how little they know me. I love nothing more in life than sleeping in. And why wake up early to pull an Elvis and shoot the TV screen at the idiotic nominations that always end up irking me?

  3. City Lights: The Oscar pool is on

Everyone has at least one skill that doesn't have a practical use. Mine is the ability to name every movie ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. I absorbed that knowledge from years of reading critical studies of the Oscars, to the point...

  13. Oscar nominees take a look back with 'New Nostalgia'

A couple of years ago, Bruce Sheridan, chair of the film program at Columbia College, noticed a curious thing happening. A few of the film majors who interned on the Chicago production of "The Dark Knight" had started making their student films and, as expected,Christopher Nolan's brooding, zeitgeisty, state-of-the-union-address of a superhero epic was a big influence. Less expected was the sort of movies it inspired. Film students have always gravitated to the shadows and stark lighting of classic noir; and Batman is the most noir-y of superheroes. Sheridan planned to see lots of noir. What he got were wide open urban spaces.

    WGN News
Last night's 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, proved to be just as big a night for the newcomers as it was for Hollywood's front-runners. Films such as "The Descendants" and "The Artist" stole the show, taking home mutiple...

  17. Golden Globes anticipation is high for host Ricky Gervais

Let's face it. Audiences will tune into the Golden Globes Sunday at 5 p.m. on NBC not so much to see if "The Artist," "The Help," "Hugo" or "Midnight in Paris" wins best picture of 2011 -- but to see just how outrageous host Ricky Gervais will get.
