  9. The 'Night Stalker' and the best of true-crime cinema

The strange saga of Richard Ramirez, the serial killer known as the "Night Stalker," who died Friday, had all the earmarks of a grungy low-budget thriller come to life. With his random, sensationalistic crimes, his startling capture by an angry mob and his notorious legion of admirers, Ramirez's rampage of death and mayhem was a disturbing tale seemingly tailor-made for Hollywood.

  15. Critic's Pick: 'The Sound of Music,' 'Psycho,' 'Mommie Dearest'

No matter whether your mother's taste — or your memory of her, for that matter — is sweet or sour, the American Cinematheque has Mother's Day programming to suit the occasion. If your mom likes things sweet, the Cinematheque's Aero Theatre in Santa Monica features a 5 p.m. screening of "The Sound of Music," with Julie Andrews and all those Von Trapp children singing their little hearts out. On the other hand, if your mom enjoys the dark end of the street, the Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood features the hair-frying 7:30 p.m. double bill of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and the Joan Crawford biopic "Mommie Dearest," starring Faye Dunaway as the parentally challenged star. It's nice to have a choice, my mother would say, and she'd be right.

  21. 'Hitchcock'

Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren are typically credible as legendary "master of suspense" Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma, in director Sacha Gervasi's docudrama, but the bigger interest is the movie's detailing of the complications - financial and...

  23. Movie review: 'Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters' of art in progress

It is a rare thing to witness the creative process. But in the excellent new documentary "Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters," filmmaker Ben Shapiro gives us fly-on-the-wall access over a 10-year period to an acclaimed artist as he envisions, designs and executes his surreal commentary on small-town American life in the form of an epic photo installation, "Beneath the Roses."
