1. As a hit man, 'Iceman' a model of productivity ★★★

For bracing proof that a) Michael Shannon can portray the coldest of killers, while b) complicating and enlivening a potentially monochromatic slab of nastiness, check out Shannon as Richard Kuklinski in director and co-writer Ariel Vromen's "The Iceman." In our mobbed-up popular culture, Kuklinski was destined for feature film treatment. He was a real-life New Jersey whack expert with an estimated 100 victims. He lived behind the facade of a stable marriage and a Normal, Happy Family, but his resume included enough grisly doings for an entire season of "The Sopranos."

  3. Film Review: A fearsome performance will keep you watching

"The Iceman" — directed by Ariel Vroman from a script he cowrote with Morgan Land — is based on the life of Richard Kuklinski, a hired killer who is believed to have murdered more people than any number of serial killers. In a 1992 HBO special with the same title, Kuklinski, when asked for a specific figure, says, "I don't know. Over a hundred, I think."

  9. Review: 'The Iceman' can't heat up, even with Michael Shannon

Michael Shannon has basically rewritten the book on how to portray dark, volatile men in film with his unerring way of channeling rage and repression. It was never more chilling, or more fully realized, than his turn as a family man both paralyzed and driven by his apocalyptic fears in 2011's "Take Shelter."

  15. With 'Harvest,' Michael Shannon goes back to his roots

Michael Shannon is riding a bit of a hot streak. His portrayal of a manic survivalist in “Take Shelter” garnered all sorts of acclaim last year. He's a standout in the otherwise somewhat muddled spiritual drama “Grace” on Broadway. He did pretty nicely with "The Iceman" earlier this year. And he’ll be reporting for Zod duty in “Man of Steel” this summer.”
