  1. Film review: 'Oblivion' is aptly named for its place in cinema history

I was prejudiced against "Oblivion" because about a week before it opened. A friend of mine got to see a movie in advance and left after the first half hour. At around the 31-minute mark, I was jealous of my friend. It's not a terrible movie in that "clearly a bomb" sort of way, but it failed to hold my interest and it was depressing to know that it was nowhere close to ending.

  3. Film review: Violent 'Jack Reacher' subject matter too soon for the theaters

Under normal circumstances, it would obviously be unprofessional for a reviewer to say that they are "not in the mood" for a particular film. After all, it is likely that many viewers are in the opposite mood, and they expect the reviewers to be open-minded if not similarly eager. But on this occasion, I must make an exception and say that I was in no mood for "Jack Reacher." I only say this because I believe that at this time there are many in this country and around the world who share my mood and my attitude toward some of the film's subject matter.

  7. 'Rock of Ages' seemed old and tired after the joy of 'Glee'

It is not a good idea to make a “Rock of Ages” movie in 2012. The film is based on a Broadway show that premiered in 2006. I’m sure that back then it seemed like a good idea to stage a musical about performers who sing recognizable 1980s hits. But we’ve seen the rise and fall of the very similar “Glee” in the meantime and now the formula seems played out.

  13. Film review: 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol' makes for impossibly good installment

Last week I wondered if we really needed "Sherlock Holmes" at the movies when we already have "House" on TV.
    Special to The Herald-Mail
Last week I wondered if we really needed "Sherlock Holmes" at the movies when we already have "House" on TV. This week, I question the necessity of a fourth "Mission Impossible" movie when we already have 22 James Bond movies with a 23rd on its way next...

  15. 'Safe Haven' and 'Jack Reacher' top DVD/Blu-ray charts

A trio of new titles arrived to knock Oscar winners “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook” from their reign atop the sales and rentals charts -- among them Tom Cruise’s box-office disappointment “Jack Reacher.” Also, probably because Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” is breaking box-office records in theaters, the company’s 2012 title “The Avengers” is back. Here are the top titles for the week that ended May 11 for sales and May 12 for rentals, according to Rentrak.
