  1. 'Trouble With the Curve' director keeps focus on film

Clint Eastwood's appearance last month at the Republican National Convention will undoubtedly go down as one of the more amusing moments in the 2012 presidential campaign. His performance-art speech with an empty chair also qualifies as one of the most unusual methods employed by a film star to get himself in front of millions of viewers just weeks before his new movie is set to open in theaters.

  5. Pussy Riot and the politics of grrrl punk

I wonder, as they sit in their separate cells, what songs the three jailed members of Pussy Riot sing to themselves to keep their spirits strong. My vote: “Resist Psychic Death” by the early 1990s punk feminist band Bikini Kill. The verse offers a four-word summation of the refusal to be mentally imprisoned: “Your world, not mine.” And the chorus provides a bullet-point mantra of determination and survival: “I’ll resist with every inch and every breath/ I’ll resist this psychic death.”

  7. Alan Abel, Hoaxer Deluxe: An Appreciation

When I was in high school, some of my friends started bands so they could cover songs by their favorite rockers. I started a gang so I could pull elaborate pranks like one of my idols, Alan Abel. With the help of confederates in the main office, I...

  15. Super sad book trailers

Here's something you don't often hear: “Did you see that new book trailer?” In fact, I never hear those words at all, let alone utter them myself. Which is odd. I am an ardent reader. Large portions of my day are spent online, scanning Twitter and traditional media websites, as well as sites that cull popular memes and viral videos. And not once have I have stumbled upon a book trailer in the natural course of my Internet wanderings. The awkward cousin to movie previews and TV teasers, book trailers have been around for a decade or so, offering glimpses of newly published books. Not that anyone noticed. If the concept has yet to make cultural inroads, the reason is obvious: Most book trailers are terrible.
