1. Patt Morrison Asks: Inside guy, Buck Henry

Buck Henry arguably made his showbiz debut at the age of 2, when his mother, the silent film star Ruth Taylor, took him to the Paramount lot to show him off. She denied then that she wanted him to go into movies. Sorry, Mom. Henry has become a polymath of directing, acting, and for my money, especially writing -- "The Graduate"; "Catch-22"; that fine dark comedy of manners, "To Die For"; TV's "Get Smart," with Mel Brooks; and a generation later, the seminal "Saturday Night Live" -- which he hosted for a then-record-setting 10 times. He beavers away on screenplays, plays and sundry prose; I pestered him into a lunch interview in West Hollywood. It was engagingly packed, with talk of the pleasures of "Hamlet" in German and a Hollywood/not Hollywood commentary on passing paraders, delivered with spare humor as dry as the natron used to stuff mummies. Hey -- isn't there a script in there somewhere?

  3. TV stars share their summer TV viewing

Beach reading recommendations are a summer tradition: With vacations offering extra leisure time, everyone wants to know what books will help them pass the hours. But many pop culture fans now devour television with the same kind of intensity: They buy box sets, Netflix or download whole seasons, treating TV series like "The Wire" and "Breaking Bad" as if they were meant to be watched in five-hour stretches.

  5. 9/11: A tragedy explored through the decade by TV

NEW YORK (AP) — There was bold talk right after 9/11 that TV would emerge from this trauma sadder but wiser. That TV would be steeled with a higher sense of purpose than had characterized it the previous half-century.

  7. The meaning of an Emmy nomination: A round-table discussion

For a television critic, the Emmys are always a mixed bag. It's always great when shows and performances we have supported from the beginning are recognized, but sometimes — if you can believe it — the shows and people we believe deserve to...

  12. 'Insidious'

Sinister spirits invade the new home of a couple - played by Patrick Wilson (who becomes a television star this fall in CBS' "A Gifted Man") and Rose Byrne ("Damages") - but the source of the scares is surprising in this thriller, which made an impressive box-office showing on a small budget.

  14. 'Damages: The Complete Third Season'

As the drama series approaches its debut on DirecTV, the last of its seasons to run on FX makes its video debut. It uses the now-familiar premise of a Ponzi scheme as its jumping-off point, as powerful attorney Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) goes after a family responsible for the losses many investors incurred.
